How to set up a VPN on iPhone and iPad: step-by-step guide
A step-by-step guide to installing and setting up a VPN on iPhone and iPad with the Happ app, what to do if the app is not in your App Store, how to verify the connection and fix common issues.
Contents
Setting up a VPN on an iPhone takes a couple of minutes and requires no networking knowledge. This guide uses Klen VPN with the free Happ app, but the same steps work for any service that gives you a VLESS subscription link.
It applies to iPhone and iPad on iOS / iPadOS 16 or later.
What you need
- an iPhone or iPad;
- a subscription link (key) from your VPN service — with Klen VPN it appears on the site right after payment;
- the free Happ app from the App Store.
Step 1. Install Happ
Open the App Store and search for Happ — Proxy Utility, or use the link on the Klen VPN homepage. Tap “Get”.
If the App Store says the app is unavailable
App availability differs by country, and in some regions (Russia in particular) VPN apps are periodically removed at the regulator’s request — this happened to Happ in 2026. You have two options:
- Switch your App Store country. Go to Settings → your name → Media & Purchases → View Account → Country/Region. Before switching you need to cancel active subscriptions and use up any Apple ID balance.
- Use another app that supports VLESS, such as v2RayTun or Hiddify. Your Klen VPN key works with them too.
Apps already installed keep working if they are removed from the store — you just cannot download them again.
Step 2. Get your key
If you do not have a subscription yet, choose a plan on the homepage and pay. After payment you will see a “Your key is ready” window with an “Add to Happ” button and your subscription link.
Save the link: it connects your other devices (up to 5), and you can reopen it with the “My key” button on the site in the same browser.
Step 3. Add the key to Happ
The easiest way is to open the key page on the iPhone itself and tap “Add to Happ”. The app opens and adds the subscription automatically.
If the button does not work:
- Tap “Copy” next to the subscription link.
- Open Happ and tap “+” in the top right corner.
- Choose “From clipboard”.
If your key is open on a computer, tap “+” in Happ, choose to add by QR code and point the camera at the QR code on the screen.
Step 4. Allow the VPN configuration
On first connection iOS asks: “Happ Would Like to Add VPN Configurations”. Tap “Allow” and confirm with your passcode or Face ID. This is a standard system prompt — no VPN app can work on iPhone without it.
Step 5. Connect
Tap the big connect button in the middle of the screen. After a second or two a VPN badge appears in the status bar — the tunnel is up.
The server is chosen automatically. You can switch it in Happ’s server list.

Choose a planHow to check the VPN is working
- The VPN badge is visible in the status bar or Control Center.
- Open ifconfig.me or whatismyipaddress.com — it should show the server’s IP and country, not your home address.
- In Settings → General → VPN & Device Management → VPN the status should read “Connected”.
Useful settings
Connect faster
Many VPN clients offer a widget or a Control Center shortcut so you can connect with one tap without opening the app.
Connect on demand
In Settings → General → VPN & Device Management → VPN, tap the “i” next to the Happ configuration and turn on Connect On Demand if the client supports it. The iPhone will then bring the tunnel up automatically, for example on unfamiliar Wi-Fi networks.
Refresh the subscription
If the VPN stops connecting, the first thing to do is refresh the subscription in Happ: pull down the server list or tap the refresh button. The app fetches current server addresses. This fixes most problems.
Common issues
The VPN badge is on but sites do not load. Refresh the subscription and reconnect. Try another server. If that does not help, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to see which network has the problem.
The VPN disconnects on its own. This usually happens when switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data or on a weak signal. Enable automatic reconnection in Happ if available and refresh the subscription. If drops keep happening on one network, try another server.
The app asks for a vless:// key. A subscription link starts with https:// and should be added as a subscription, not a single key. In Happ, just paste it with “+” → “From clipboard”.
It only fails on mobile data. Carriers sometimes restrict mobile internet to a whitelist of approved sites — in that mode no VPN works. More on this and other causes in VPN not connecting: causes and fixes.
