VPN on Android: install and set up in 2 minutes

On Android a VPN is even easier to set up than on iPhone: you can install the app from Google Play or as a regular file. Below is a step-by-step guide for Klen VPN using the free Happ app. It works on phones and tablets running Android 8 or later: Samsung, Xiaomi, Redmi, POCO, Pixel, Honor, Huawei, Realme and others.

What you need

• an Android phone or tablet;
• a subscription link from your VPN service — with Klen VPN it appears right after payment;
• the free Happ app.

Step 1. Install Happ

From Google Play

Open Google Play, search for Happ — Proxy Utility and tap “Install”. Or tap the Google Play button on the Klen VPN homepage.

As an APK (no Google Play)

On Huawei and Honor phones without Google services, or if the app is unavailable in your region, install it as a file:

1. On the Klen VPN homepage, in “Use it on any device”, choose Android and tap “Download APK”. The file comes from Happ’s official GitHub releases page.
2. Open the downloaded file from the notification or the Downloads folder.
3. Android will ask to allow installs from unknown sources — allow it for the browser you used.
4. Tap “Install”.

Only install VPN apps from official sources. APKs from forums and file-sharing sites may contain malware.

Step 2. Get your key

Choose a plan on the Klen VPN homepage and pay. You will see a “Your key is ready” window with an “Add to Happ” button and your subscription link. Save the link — it connects your other devices too, up to 5 at once.

Step 3. Add the key

• On the same phone: tap “Add to Happ” — the app opens and adds the subscription.
• If the button does not work: copy the subscription link, open Happ, tap “+” → “From clipboard”.
• If the key is open on a computer: tap “+” in Happ and scan the QR code on the screen.

Step 4. Allow the VPN connection

On first connection Android shows a system “Connection request” dialog warning that the app will be able to monitor traffic. This is standard for every VPN app. Tap “OK”.

Step 5. Connect

Tap the big connect button. A key icon appears in the status bar — the VPN is on. The server is picked automatically; you can change it in the server list.

Useful Android settings

Always-on VPN

Android can keep the VPN on at all times and restart it after a reboot:

1. Open Settings → Network & internet (or Connections) → VPN.
2. Tap the gear next to Happ.
3. Turn on Always-on VPN.

“Block connections without VPN” stops any traffic from bypassing the tunnel — maximum protection, but if the VPN cannot connect you will have no internet at all. Use it deliberately.

Menu names differ slightly on Samsung, Xiaomi and other skins — the easiest way is to search settings for “VPN”.

Disable battery optimization for the VPN app

MIUI / HyperOS (Xiaomi), One UI (Samsung) and EMUI / MagicOS (Huawei, Honor) aggressively close background apps, which can drop the VPN when the screen is off:

• find Happ in Settings → Apps;
• under Battery choose “Unrestricted” or “Don’t optimize”;
• on Xiaomi also enable “Autostart”.

Split tunneling

Many VLESS clients let you choose apps that bypass the VPN — for example, a banking app or a navigation app. Handy if a service refuses foreign IP addresses.

Common issues

VPN icon is on but there is no internet. Refresh the subscription in Happ (refresh button or pull down on the server list), reconnect, try another server.

VPN drops when the screen is off. Remove battery restrictions for Happ and enable Always-on VPN as described above.

Works on Wi-Fi but not on mobile data. Your carrier may be restricting mobile internet to a whitelist of approved sites — no VPN works in that mode. See VPN not connecting: causes and fixes.

The APK will not install. Make sure you allowed installs from unknown sources for your browser or file manager and that the phone has enough free storage.

Can I use a different app? Yes. Your Klen VPN key works with any client that supports VLESS and subscriptions: v2RayTun, Hiddify, v2rayNG.
