VPN for your computer: setting up on Windows and macOS

You need a VPN on your computer as much as on your phone: laptops are the devices we most often connect to other people’s networks in cafés, coworkings and hotels. Here is a guide for Windows 10, Windows 11 and macOS using the free Happ app. The same key works on all your devices — up to 5 at once.

What you need

• a computer running Windows 10 / 11 (x64 or ARM) or a Mac with Intel or Apple Silicon;
• a subscription link from your VPN service — with Klen VPN it appears right after payment;
• the free Happ app.

Windows 10 and 11

Step 1. Download and install Happ

1. On the Klen VPN homepage choose the Windows tab and click “Download for Windows”. The file comes from Happ’s official GitHub releases page.
2. If your laptop has an ARM processor (Snapdragon — some Surface and Lenovo models), use “For ARM processors”. Not sure? Take the first link — that covers regular Intel and AMD computers.
3. Run the installer. Windows SmartScreen may show “Windows protected your PC” — common for software from smaller developers. Click “More info” → “Run anyway”.
4. Finish installation and launch Happ.

Step 2. Add your key

1. On the key page, click “Copy” next to the subscription link.
2. In Happ click “+” → “From clipboard”.
3. The subscription appears in the list and servers load automatically.

Step 3. Connect

Click the connect button. On first launch Windows may ask permission to change network settings or install a network driver (TUN) — allow it.

Modes: system proxy vs TUN

VLESS clients on desktop usually have two modes:

• System proxy — browsers and most programs use the VPN, but some apps (games, certain messengers, command-line tools) ignore the proxy.
• TUN (virtual network adapter) — all of the computer’s traffic goes through the VPN, like a classic VPN. Requires administrator rights.

If an app does not “see” the VPN, switch to TUN mode in Happ’s settings.

macOS

Step 1. Install Happ

Two ways:

• From the App Store — search for Happ — Proxy Utility. Works on Apple Silicon Macs (M1–M4). If the App Store says it is unavailable in your region, use the second option.
• As a .dmg — on the Klen VPN homepage choose macOS → “Download .dmg”. The universal build runs on Intel and Apple Silicon. Open the file and drag Happ into Applications.

If macOS says the app cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified, open System Settings → Privacy & Security and click “Open Anyway” next to the Happ message.

Step 2. Add the key and connect

1. Copy the subscription link on the key page.
2. In Happ click “+” → “From clipboard”.
3. Click the connect button.
4. macOS asks permission to add a VPN configuration or network extension — click “Allow” and enter your password if prompted.

The app icon appears in the menu bar, and a new configuration shows up in System Settings → VPN.

How to check the VPN is working

1. Open ifconfig.me or whatismyipaddress.com: the country and IP should match the VPN server.
2. Check for DNS leaks at dnsleaktest.com: your ISP’s DNS servers should not appear.
3. Compare speedtest.net results with and without the VPN — with a good service the difference is small.

Linux

There is a .deb package for Ubuntu and Debian, .rpm for Fedora and .pkg.tar.zst for Arch — links are on the homepage under the Linux tab. Install with your package manager, then the same steps: “+” → “From clipboard” → connect.

Common issues

The browser uses the VPN but a game or messenger does not. Enable TUN mode: in system proxy mode some programs bypass the VPN.

No internet after turning the VPN off. Sometimes the client does not restore system proxy settings in time. On Windows check Settings → Network & Internet → Proxy and turn off manual proxy. On macOS: System Settings → Network → your network → Details → Proxies.

Antivirus flags the installer. Only download Happ from the project’s official page (our links point there). If the file came from there, you can add it to your antivirus exclusions.

Work laptop. Installing third-party software and VPNs on work computers is often prohibited by company policy. Check with your IT team.

It is slow. Try another server, test your speed without the VPN (the line itself may be slow) and pause background downloads. More causes in VPN not connecting or slow.

Summary

• Windows: download the Happ installer (x64 or ARM), paste the link with “+” → “From clipboard”, connect. If an app ignores the VPN, enable TUN.
• macOS: App Store or .dmg, “+” → “From clipboard”, allow the VPN configuration.
